General CERN access permissions and trainings are required for any CERN site regardless of experiment, and a prerequisite for CMS access: Safety at CERN, Emergency Evacuation, Computer Security, Data Privacy Basics, Ethics at CERN, and Security Awareness. Available on the LMS.
CMS – Mandatory Trainings
| CERN – LHC Large Experiments (online) | Provides an overview of the LHC experiments and associated risks. |
| CMS – Surface & Underground Areas (online) | Introduces the CMS environment, access rules and location-specific hazards. |
| Self-Rescue Mask (classroom) | Required for underground access. |
| Radiation Protection – Supervised Area (online) | Required for access in supervised radiological areas. |
| Radiation Protection – Controlled Area – Initial (online / classroom) | Required for access to radiation-controlled areas. |
Please note, according to activities performed or areas to be accessed, or roles/responsibilities covered within CMS, additional training might be mandatory and required (e.g. for works at heights, for working on electrical areas, etc.).
Please, be in contact with cms-safety-team@cern.ch to get more information.
Recommended Trainings
These courses are not mandatory for most users but are strongly recommended.
- Register to the First responders “Life-Saving Actions” training at CERN (3h): this course is advised to all CERN Members of Personnel.
- Register to the First Aid – SST training at CERN (14h): this course gives additional first aid knowledge and is targeting specific audience. Please, be in contact with cms-safety-team@cern.ch.
- Register for the Fire Extinguisher course at CERN (2h): this course is open to all CERN Members of Personnel.
- Register for the Emergency Guide course: this course gives additional emergency preparedness knowledge and is targeting specific audience. Please, be in contact with cms-safety-team@cern.ch.
Additional Information for Radiation Protection Course
The training course is mandatory for all people who need a personal dosimeter:
- For accessing the Supervised Radiation Areas, the course on LMS is sufficient (around 30 min. online).
- For accessing the Controlled Radiation Areas, enrolment on LMS is compulsory at the following links (for CERN members of personnel, blended training online and classroom course).
Training Registration Support
Most training registrations can be managed directly through the CERN Learning Hub (LMS).
If you experience issues related to:
- Training registration
- Waiting lists
- Reserved seats for upcoming sessions
- Course enrolment problems
- Pending registration confirmations
- Training records and attendance
Please contact the CERN Safety Training team directly: safety.training@cern.ch
